Camosun's Indigenization Initiatives
Camosun's Indigenization Initiatives are aligned with BC's Aboriginal Post-secondary Education and Training Policy Framework and Action Plan and the Indigenous Education Protocol for Colleges and Institutes. The vision, goals, actions, and planning contexts are upheld by the Indigenization Policy.
Indigenization policy
Indigenization is a strong indicator of Camosun’s leadership role in regard to Indigenous adult education in British Columbia and beyond. Depicted as a four corner-post model, Indigenization is reflective of the traditional longhouses of the Lekwungen and W̱SÁNEĆ peoples upon whose territories the college resides. Indigenization incorporates the values, principles, and teachings of Na’tsa’maht – a Lekwungen term meaning “unity or working together as one.” The purpose of this policy is to articulate the commitment and vision of Camosun College in its ongoing work of Indigenization across and within all areas of the College.
Indigenization broadens the college's capacity to recognize, respect, acknowledge and integrate Indigenous worldviews by:
- making the institution more welcoming and relevant to Indigenous learners;
- preparing non-Indigenous students, graduates, and employees to better understand and co-exist with Indigenous peoples;
- demonstrating Camosun’s capacity for creativity, innovation, and imagination, and
- enhancing Camosun’s goal to be a college of life-changing learning.
