Two Camosun Chargers athletes have been honoured by the Pacific Western Athletic Association (PACWEST) for their outstanding play on the court this past weekend. Takeshi Croke (Reynolds Secondary, Victoria, BC) from the men’s basketball team and Jasanna Kunz (George Elliot Secondary, Lake Country) from women’s volleyball picked up the Athlete of the Week honours.

“Chargers have shown their indomitable spirit and tenacity, refusing to give up no matter the odds,” says Lane Trotter, Camosun College President. “A big shout out to Takeshi and Jasanna for both being named as PACWEST Athlete of the Week. With only a handful of games remaining in the regular season, good luck to all of the Charger basketball and volleyball athletes who go out on the court each week and make the college proud!”

In a weekend sweep against Douglas College, Croke was sensational. He contributed to a decisive 97 – 65 victory putting up 13 points and five rebounds on a stellar 67 per cent shooting and was perfect from the free throw line. Additionally, he added five rebounds, three assists, and two steals without committing a turnover in 22 minutes of play.

In a more competitive game on Saturday, Takeshi was masterful in his control of the pace and tempo at the most crucial sequences of the game. His performance was spectacular with a stat line of 20 points on 47 per cent shooting, three rebounds, three assists, and not a single turnover. Most importantly, 12 of his points came down the stretch in the fourth quarter where he was also perfect from the free throw line. Croke’s clutch performance was a decisive factor in Camosun’s come from behind victory (83-78) which elevated the team in the league standings.

Kunz, a first-year athlete, notched 23 kills, leading her team in scoring on their way to two hard-fought victories over the weekend. Her impressive offensive contribution was matched by her steady defense, earning 22 digs, and two blocks. She also showed strength from the service line and scored five aces. The Chargers won both matches on the weekend against the College of the Rockies Avalanche, 3-1 on Friday and 3-2 on Saturday.

The Camosun Chargers Athletics Program currently fields teams in basketball and volleyball. Since joining the CCAA and Pacific West Athletic Association (PACWEST) conferences in 1994, the Chargers have competed in over 100 national and provincial championships with over 50 medal winning finishes.
