Leading edge sport analytics, project management, marketing, and the economics of sport are just a few of the exciting new offerings.
Leading-edge sport analytics, project management, marketing, and the economics of sport are just a few of the exciting new offerings integrated into Camosun’s new Bachelor of Sport Management program.
The new sport management degree replaces the former Bachelor of Sport and Fitness Leadership – Sport Management Specialization, which was redesigned to meet the needs of a rapidly evolving sport industry.
“We looked at what the industry was asking for, to prepare our students in the best way possible for career development,” says Gord Inglis, Chair Sport Management, Exercise & Wellness, and Adventure Education. “It became readily apparent through consultations with our student body, faculty, graduates and sport management professionals that we could strengthen our degree by adding a stronger foundation of business and marketing courses with an applied approach that would allow our graduates to become industry leaders.”
The program builds on Camosun’s industry-leading expertise in sport management and offers students a unique educational experience.
“It’s the only one of its kind in Western Canada,” notes Inglis. “We’re very proud to offer a stand-alone Bachelor of Sport Management degree that is focussed on staying ahead of industry trends.”
The combination of Camosun’s sport management expertise and the South Island’s culture of sport and recreation excellence is a perfect match. “It’s commonly recognized that Victoria is a sport mecca and there’s tremendous leadership and programming throughout the region,” says Inglis. “I think we are ideally located to have a program which meets the needs of the next generation of sport management professionals who are needed not only around Victoria, Vancouver, and B.C., but across Canada.”
For years, graduates of the previous program have found success in their careers, thanks to the strength of Camosun’s applied approach to education.
“With over 50 provincial sport organizations in B.C. and many local, municipal, regional and national organizations throughout Canada, the breadth of opportunities is really fantastic” notes Inglis. “Our grads have gone on to exciting careers within municipal recreation and sport organizations such as Canadian Sport Institute Pacific, Victoria Royals Hockey, Pacific FC, BC Lions and Hockey Canada.
The renewed curriculum began to roll out in fall 2018 and the first group of students under the new credential will graduate in June 2020.
“Our degree leads students to find and grow their passion through sport,” says Inglis. “To anyone considering our new program, I think it will be a full and rich educational experience providing them with industry-ready, leading-edge sport management knowledge and skills like none other.”
